As part of a university research and media project, I co-created and produced Locked Up Inc., a podcast examining the history and impact of private prisons in the United States. I contributed to the project through investigative research and fact-checking, interview development, scriptwriting, narrative structure, and audio production and editing, helping turn complex social and political issues into an accessible, engaging audio story.
Season 1, Episode 3: Private Prisons Uncovered: A Case Study at Winn Correctional Center
In this episode of Locked Up Inc., hosts Julia, Veronica, and Campbell explore the history and the impact of private prisons in America and their emergence in the 1980s as a result of mass incarceration. We dive into the profit-driven nature of private prisons and focus on private prison corporations like CoreCivic who prioritize cutting corners and impose high costs on incarcerated individuals and their families.
Through an interview with Shane Bauer – journalist and former undercover prison guard at Winn Correctional Center – our podcast sheds light on the harsh realities, human rights abuses, and the future broader impacts for the prison industrial complex.
